| By Juan B. Gutierrez. «Gutiérrez’s town of Villapintada takes us back in time
to a small Colombian town which transcends time and space. Here, the author
portrays man’s nature via a thorough description of characters and the
intricate relationships among them. The universality of the topics developed
reminds the reader of a Borgesian claim “What one man does is something
done, in some measure, by all men” (Borges, “The Form of the Sword”
120 Ficciones) In Gutierrez’s novel, what happens in Villapintada and
the interactions among its inhabitants are somewhat representative of the social
dynamics in Latin America which seem to be rooted in long established traditions
